Save Our Stones—SOS!
Leaks and crumbling plaster have been exacerbated by the excess moisture we have had this spring. The damage has occurred in the vestibule of the church. The drops falling on our angel’s umbrella are
representative of the falling plaster in the vestibule! Unfortunately, the damage has reached a point where we can no longer defer the repair to this damaged area. Since the immediacy of this repair has been unexpected, we have no money
in the budget for this cost. We plan to do this repair immediately and also take care of other maintenance issues before they become an emergency. To make a long story short, we need your help! Over the next six months you will receive
special Save Our Stones envelopes. We are counting on all of us to do what we can. Through this appeal we hope to raise $20,000.

40 Million Americans are now living in poverty. That’s wrong - right?
Cycling for Change, a 5000 mile bicycle pilgrimage led by Jesuit Fr. Matt Ruhl of Kansas City, is a call to action for all people of goodwill to address the growth of poverty in America. Communities along the
route will be encourage to highlight local poverty issues, to raise funds to benefit local poverty reducing programs and to invite governments, social service agencies, businesses and concerned citizens to work together to develop
strategic solutions to the national problem of poverty.
Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), the largest network of social service organizations in the nation initiated a multi-faceted approach to reduce poverty in the United States. The CCUSA campaign stresses the
need for businesses, faith-based organizations, government and individuals to come together to strategically address the systemic causes of poverty in this country. In addition to acting as a catalyst for change as they move across the

Oil Spill in the Gulf—Catholic Action
Apostleship Of The Sea Sets Up Network, Urges Catholics To Assist Those Harmed By Oil Spill
The overseer of the maritime ministry of the U.S. bishops expressed solidarity with those impacted by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and announced the creation of a network to help with the human and
environmental harm caused by the disaster.
Savannah Bishop J. Kevin Boland, bishop promoter of the Apostleship of the Sea, urged Catholics to assist the work already being done by the Church to address this disaster. He said the Apostleship of the Sea
is setting up a network of diocesan relief efforts along the Gulf Coast and cited the work of Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of New Orleans (www.ccano.org) as one avenue for
getting involved.
Bishop Boland also offered prayers for the victims of the oil rig explosion and their families and for the fishermen and others whose livelihoods are threatened by the environmental damage to the Gulf. He
also urged Catholic to pray for the success of efforts to stop the spill and clean up the Gulf.
"It is God's creation," Bishop Boland said of the environment. "He has given it to us to take care of it. We must do all that we can, both as individuals and as a Church and as a community to
restore to its proper dimensions and its proper beauty what God has given to us."
The Apostleship of the Sea provides spiritual care to seafarers and all who rely on the sea for their livelihood. For more information on the Apostleship of the Sea and its relief efforts in the Gulf, visit: www.uscb.org/pcmrt/onmove/aos.shtml .

JustFaith JustMatters
The recent JustFaith graduates decided to continue their education and formation in justice matters. Instead of the 30 week JustFaith course, we will engage in an eight week JustMatters: Module: Crossing
Borders: Migration, Theology, and the Human Journey. The sessions will begin in September and continue for 8 weeks. More information will be given at the end of August.
Immigration is a complex issue that is reshaping the cultural, economic and political landscape of the planet. Anyone who speaks of simple solutions either does not understand it or is not listening. Each
group in the immigration debate makes rightful claims to issues like economic stability, American jobs, cultural integrity, fiscal constraints, national security, human rights, property rights, labor rights, law and order, and many
other issues. Many are divided over this issue precisely because it creates fault lines between many values that are important to us. Finding common ground amidst the fractious debate is not easy, which is the reason why it has become
such an incendiary, political issue.
This eight session module provides participants a chance to find common ground and to discover more about themselves, our God and the millions of people who are on the move in every part of the world. All are
welcome to attend and become more informed

News from the Altar Society
On Saturday, May 22, twenty women gathered together for the Altar and Rosary Society’s women's retreat. We were fortunate to have Sr. Linda as our spiritual leader. Our topic was “How we are called to serve”.
Each of us has a gift or talent that could or should be used. We just need to be willing to do it; hopefully we all will. We hope to have another women's retreat next year. We will keep you posted.
On June 27 we went to Atchison, Kansas with Sr. Sharon to visit the Sisters and the Benedictine monastery, Mount St. Scholastica. It is a beautiful place, a “must see” if you have never been there. The
sisters have some wonderful retreats available and offer overnight accommodations. 12 women made this trip.
Our next meeting is August 1, with the installation of our new officers at 8:30 am Mass, followed by our meeting in the Parish hall. Please join us and bring any suggestions for fund raisers or social events
that you may have.
God’s peace and blessing.

Living the St. Francis Pledge Recycling Glass Gets Easier
Did you know Boulevard Brewing Company and partners are offering glass recycling all over the metro area, and processing what they collect locally? Two purple collection bins are close to GA: 1) at 51st &
Main just north of Andre’s, near Plaza Library; 2) southeast of World Market in Westport, convenient to SunFresh. For other locations near home or work, go to www.rippleglasskc.com . All food and beverage containers welcome. No need to de-label or sort colors.
Why recycle glass?
Using recycled glass to create new glass or fiberglass insulation produces 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than working from raw materials.
Every ton of glass recycled saves more than a ton of raw materials. Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100 watt incandescent bulb for 4 hours. Now that’s amazing!
Kansas Citians use approximately 80,000 TONS of container glass a year. So far, only 5% was being recycled. Some places in the world recycle over 90%. Let’s go, KC!! The earth thanks you.
