Here are brief descriptions of the many ways in which parishioners at Guardian Angels give of themselves for the benefit of the entire parish. Please read through these descriptions of our ministries and consider your own opportunities for stewardship. We appreciate your gifts of time and talent to the church and to the community.

Prayer & Worship

Pastoral Council
The Council helps with parish vision and policy. Members are chosen for 3-year terms by a discernment process. All parishioners are always welcome to attend the monthly meetings.

Prayer & Worship Committee
Plan the liturgical seasons and celebrations. The committee meets prior to each season and major celebration.

Prayer Concerns
People write their concerns in the Parish Book of Intentions found at the main church entrance. At the beginning of Mass, this book is placed near the altar.

Art & Environment
These volunteers help design and implement church decorations for Advent, Christmas, Lent, etc.

Eucharistic Minister
Assist in the distribution of Communion at Mass and to those at home who cannot attend Mass due to health. Training is offered.

Hospitality

Greeter - Open the door and welcome all those coming to Mass. Offer direction and assistance to those who are new and/or unfamiliar with the Church.
Usher - Help with seating, collections, and distribute bulletins after Mass. Attend to special situations during Mass.

Lector
Proclaim the Word of God at Mass and liturgical celebrations. Training is offered.

Sacristan
Help prepare the altar and church before Mass and/or help with the care of altar linens.

Server
Assist during weekend Masses. Training is offered to all children in the 4th grade and older and who have made their First Communion.

Pastoral Care Team
Visit the sick and shut-ins. Be available to assist in time of family crisis (with food, transportation, etc.)

Small Christian Communities
Meet regularly with other parishioners to pray and discuss faith issues, leading to service. This is a home-based faith sharing program that allows for small group support and scripture study. Groups meet weekly or monthly.

Pray
Regularly for the needs of GA.

Music

All music possibilities are open to youth and teens.

Cantor
Help lead the singing at Mass.

Weekly Choir
Sing each weekend at the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday or the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday. Members rehearse 30 minutes before Mass. New members are always welcome.

Funeral Choir
Sing for each parish funeral. Choir members are contacted by phone when a funeral occurs. Singers who are available on weekday mornings are always needed.

Concert Choir
Join a special choir formed seasonally (Christmas and Easter) to provide music for special concerts and Christmas, Holy week, and Easter services. Rehearsals occur on weekends, eight weeks prior to Christmas and Easter.

Education Ministry & Youth

Education Committee
Develop and promote educational programs that answer the needs that parishioners feel and express.

Parish School of Religion
Guardian Angels has a family-based religious education program for all children of the parish, especially those in public schools. Children in 1st through 6th grades meet to form their own faith group. Both groups meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month, September through May.

Adult Religious Education
Participate in ongoing enrichment sessions in Scripture, current church teachings, etc. Various educational opportunities are offered throughout the year, such as scripture study, church issues, morality, etc. Please consult this web site and the church bulletin for these opportunities or call the Parish Office (816-931-4351) to request sessions on certain topics.

Catechist/Assistant
Join a devoted staff of catechists in teaching the Christian faith. Work with pre-school, sacrament preparation, family faith sessions, junior high, or confirmation. Catechists help with children of preschool age during the 11:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday, September through May.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)
Walk the journey, as a sponsor or a team member, with those who want to join the Catholic Church. An RCIA sponsor accompanies a person who is preparing to become a Catholic. Sponsors represent the parish community and introduce the prospective Catholic to the community. The RCIA group meets weekly from September through May.

Special Children’s Events
Two or three times a year, special events are planned to benefit the children. Join others in planning and assisting in the different activities.

Youth Ministry
All students in middle school (6th-8th grades) and high school (9th-12th grades) are welcome to attend and participate in youth group events: social events, service opportunities, and faith experiences. A Youth Advisory Board serves as the core leadership team to plan events. All youth are encouraged to participate in the planning and implementation of the events. Guardian Angels and Sacred Heart / Guadalupe share a Youth Ministry program.

Youth Advisory Board
Adults as well as youth volunteers meet monthly to advise and implement youth programs for the parish (lock-ins, open gym, service projects, etc.).

Social Outreach

Social Outreach Committee
Help plan and support activities for outreach.

Food Pantry/Emergency Assistance
Volunteers help coordinate food drives and other occasional projects. Parishioners donate food as they wish and on designated Sundays throughout the year. An Emergency Assistance Board meets bi-monthly to offer advice on the Social Ministries Program.

Community Service
Volunteers help with neighborhood projects as the need arises.

C.R.O.P. Walk
Volunteers walk or pledge money for this anti-hunger fundraiser on the second Sunday of October.

Thanksgiving Baskets
There is a special food and money drive in the fall to assist the needy so that they might have a Thanksgiving Dinner.

Giving Tree
This is a parish Advent project by which parishioners donate designated gifts, as well as donations for food, rent, and utilities, to those in need.

Social Justice Team
Join other parishioners monthly to plan projects and promote peace and justice issues for parish involvement.

Respect Life
Join with others who want to take an active role in supporting Respect Life issues; e.g., abortion, death penalty, and euthanasia.

Need a Ride to Church? Driver
Transport those who are unable to drive themselves to church and back home.

Christmas in October
Join a city-wide effort to rehab houses on the second Saturday in October.

Interfaith Care Team

Visit neighborhood shut-ins
Bereavement/Grief
Offer to be there with people in their time of need.
AIDS Care Team
Join a team of volunteers to offer support services to persons with AIDS. Training is provided. The team meets as needed to plan and discuss issues related to this care.

Parish & Community Life

Community Life Committee
Help plan and provide parish social activities to bring parishioners together and promote community and hospitality.

Altar and Rosary Society
Join this group at their bi-monthly meetings in February, April, June, August, October, and December. We pray the Rosary at 8:10 a.m. before Mass in these months and meet in the Parish Hall after Mass for refreshments and a short meeting to plan our activities throughout the year, including the Angels Attic and Basement Sale (formerly the Trash to Treasure Sale) in November. Everyone is welcome.

Quilters
Meet each Wednesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall to hand quilt. Newcomers are always welcome. Quilters are always willing to teach their skills. Monies earned go to the Altar Society. Bring a thimble and lunch, or dine with the Senior Saints.

Senior Saints
Join a lively group of Seniors for lunch on Wednesdays in the Parish Hall from Labor Day through Memorial Day. Stay for bingo. Volunteers cook and serve the lunch.

Ceramics
Create beautiful keepsakes on Thursdays in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Dues are $1.00 a week. All are welcome.

Dinner for Eight
Join groups of eight parishioners who meet bi-monthly to share a pot-luck meal and companionship at a mutually convenient time in one another’s homes. New groups are formed at the beginning of each calendar year.

Lenten Sharing Groups
Groups meet weekly during Lent to discuss scripture. Meetings occur in parishioners’ homes and at the Parish Office.

After Hours Phone Answerers
Help answer the parish phones after hours about three times a month and enable those who call to receive information from a live and knowledgeable person instead of a machine recording.

Anniversary Celebrations
If you would like special recognition of an anniversary, please call the Parish Office (816-931-4351).

Annulments
For information regarding the annulment process, please call Margaret Lima or Fr. Glenn Mueller at the Parish Office (816-931-4351).

Welcoming Committee
Join with staff to offer a welcome and information about Guardian Angels to those who are new to the parish.

Coffee & Donuts or Latte & Biscotti
Host coffee hour after Mass. Includes set-up and clean-up. Food and drinks provided along with complete instructions.

Funeral Luncheons
Volunteers form teams that, on a rotating basis, prepare covered dishes, serve, and clean up lunch for family and friends after a funeral of a loved one. Other parishioners are invited to provide a covered dish for the luncheon.

Parish Mailings
Give an hour or two during the day to help prepare large mailings to the parish.

Publicity
Help establish media relations.

Bulletin
Information for the bulletin needs to be given to Dianne McGovern in the Parish Office by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday preceding publication. Phone 816-931-4351 or Fax 816-531-6396.

The Trumpet (Bimonthly Parish Newsletter)
Volunteers write, edit, publish, and bulk mail the parish newsletter and calendar. Parishioners, Pastoral Council, and Staff members are invited to submit articles.

Make Signs and Posters
Offer art skills to publicize our events.

Parish Festival
Be a part of this annual fun fundraising event for the Parish. The Festival is held on the first Sunday of June. Festival Committee members are always needed to plan the festival. Hundreds volunteer on the actual day to help with food, bingo, and games. Committee meetings are announced on this web site and in the bulletin.

Festival Committee
Members meet monthly from January till June.
Festival Workers
Cook, serve, run games, help with set-up, etc. on the second Sunday in June.

YAFC Young Adults
20 and 30 Somethings meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Guardian Angels Center to plan for the rest of the month. The focus is on social, spiritual, and outreach activities.

Volunteer for Special Events
Events are scheduled throughout the year and short-term help is always needed. Events include: Feast Day Party (October), Attic & Basement Sale (November), Taco Monday (October), Christmas Craft Show (November), Mardi Gras Party (pre-Lent), Fish Fry (Lent), and the Parish Festival (first Sunday of June). Please call the Parish Office (816-931-4351) for the name of the current chairpersons.

Wedding Coordinator
Parishioners volunteer to assist with wedding preparations for the practice and actual wedding ceremony. The coordinator offers hospitality and information to the wedding party, who are often not familiar with the facilities at Guardian Angels. Coordinators are also responsible for opening and locking the church.

Building & Grounds

Building and Grounds Committee
Help prioritize the building needs of Guardian Angels. Volunteers plan and implement needed repairs and upkeep to church and property. The committee meets quarterly to evaluate and approve projects. Volunteers are needed for spring and fall clean-ups and special projects.

Groundskeeping
Lawnmowing, flower planting, flower watering, snow shoveling.

Maintenance & General Repair
Painting, electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.

Stewardship & Development

Finance Council
Meet monthly to assist the Pastoral Administrator, review the parish finances, and develop strategies for stewardship.

Collection Counter
Qualified volunteers count the offertory collection after weekend Masses. Each team volunteers once a month.

Stewardship Appeal
Help the Parish learn the Christian use of time, talent, and money, leading parishioners to higher levels of giving for the Lord’s work. This committee coordinates the Parish Spring Drive and the Diocesan Together We Can campaign in the fall.
